Honu-Hawaiian Sea Turtles

IMG_0261The Honu, or Hawaiian sea turtle, is the Hawaiian symbol of longevity, peace, good luck, humility, long life and the spirit within. In Hawaii, legend tells about a green sea turtle, Kauila, who could change herself into a girl to watch over the children playing at Punalu’u Beach on the Big Island. When Kauila’s mother dug her nest, a fresh water spring surged upward, quenching the children’s thirst. Kauila is the “mythical mother” of all turtles, and perhaps of our children as well. It’s also said that turtles were the guides for the first voyagers to Hawaii.

I posted this for a fellow blogger who loves turtles…and copied this explanation of the legend ..which I would add..that the “Honu” by all explanations from my Hawaiian friends…are the great protectors…and I visit them often connecting to the spirit within…

I was looking for my videos…yet when my phone got wet..I no longer have those..so my stills will have to do..taking more videos in the future.

  1. You know, for as long as I lived there, I never really understood the significance of the honu, so it’s great that you posted it here. I guess, I just took these things for granted and thought because it was rare it was revered. Thanks Robyn!

    • I learned about them..when a piece of Jewelry I found was a beautiful Honu…I became drawn to going to the beach rocks and silently calling them..connecting to them spiritually has been my calling..we have a huge Turtle birthing preserve..they have been protected from being hunted for many many years..some say this is why Maui has had so many sharks lately because of our numerous Turtles..they are very special in my heart though
